Every African child dreams of playing professional football on the grand stages of Europe. For Ahmad Gaidam, that dream led him to Dubai in February 2020, armed with hope and a life's savings, only to have it all stolen by a fraudulent agent who vanished, leaving him stranded just as COVID-19 lockdowns began. Alone in a foreign country, with no money, no connections, and no way home, Ahmad faced a choice: give up or fight back.
But Nigerians are built differently.
A stroke of luck connected Ahmad with a former university friend from China, also Nigerian, who was studying in Dubai. With no questions asked, this friend and his roommates took Ahmad in. He slept on their floor, shared their meals, and weathered the storm of the pandemic lockdowns through their kindness. When restrictions lifted, Ahmad hit the streets—not to chase his shattered playing dreams, but to survive.
Then, football gave him a new purpose.
Neighborhood kids, drawn to his skills during casual street games, began asking, "Coach Ahmad, can you teach us?" With nothing but a ball and relentless passion, he started training 15 local children on dusty pitches. Word spread quickly. Parents watched in admiration as their kids improved not just as players, but as disciplined, confident individuals. What began as informal sessions soon grew into a movement.
The breakthrough came when one father, impressed by the transformation in his son, made an extraordinary offer: he would fully fund Ahmad's visa and the academy's launch, asking only to be repaid when possible. Ahmad didn't just repay him within six months—he built an institution.
From those humble beginnings in Al Nahda, Yoshi Football Academy has flourished into multiple branches across Sharjah and Kent College. But this is more than just a success story—it's proof that when opportunity meets resilience, extraordinary things happen.
